Cook Yourself Thin

It's been ages since my last post, but life is hectic and one thing I am always working on is good health. That includes getting myself down to a healthy weight. I've tried lots of things, some with great success and others not so much. Now I am trying to lose weight with the Cook Yourself Thin website. You can join on a monthly basis which runs about $17 a month. You have access to their community, tips on exercise and of course, a daily journal, which is crucial for losing weight. Once you begin to see how your calories pile up, you are much more likely to stick to a diet that works, but with this site, you get to learn how to cook your favorite meals by cutting out the fat and calories. I plan on making the chicken tenders tonight and tomorrow I will make the penne ala vodka without the vodka or the heavy cream sauce. Gone In The Blink Of An Eye

It's been a very long time since I've posted, but much has happened in my life that has prevented me from posting regularly. Having said that, I just couldn't allow another day to go by without posting about Michael Jackson. This man was literally the soundtrack of my life from the time I was in middle school. I distinctly remember listening to my transistor radio on the bus taking me to school and hearing the Jackson 5 singing "ABC". I was hooked from the first note and I am happy to say that my own kids have favored Jackson's music over the years. It has been over a week since his untimely passing and I still can't quite wrap my brain around it. I know we will always have the music that he created, but nothing can replace a man who was bigger than life in every way possible. Michael, I will miss you! Rest peacefully.

Gwyneth Paltrow has developed her own website which she calls "Goop". I guess it's a play on the word "scoop", except she replaced the "sc" with a "G", which I suppose makes her very clever. Apparently, Gwyneth sees herself as an authority of sorts on anything to do with living. When you go to Goop, you will see that she has very neatly divided her website into various categories including everything from what to make to how to be (what????). Gwyneth has her critics, some of whom are saying "who does she think she is....Madonna???" (I just made that up), but seriously, people are talking and not necessarily saying anything particularly nice. Gwyneth will not be deterred however. She claims that people are always asking her advice on all of these things any way, so why not put it all on a website? Maybe she's got a point since her newest fan club member includes none other than Oprah who thinks Gwyneth is just swell.

Whenever Oprah comes across something that works for her, she doesn't keep it a secret. Viewers have come to respect her, so when Oprah found relief for her menopausal symptoms from bioidentical hormones, she did not one, but three shows dedicated to finding relief through "natural" hormones derived from plant extracts. Of course, most women know that the queen of bioidentical hormones is Suzanne Somers. No one could have stifled her, including the many physicians who warn women of the dangers of these unregulated hormones. However, for once Suzanne's diligence has paid off. Doctors eventually began listening to women and the use of bioidentical hormones have become more mainstream. The only problem is that Suzanne comes across as a bit of a kook with the over fifty vitamins and supplements she takes daily, including three different kinds of hormones. She claims that she has no intention of fading into old age, but comes off like she is clinging to youth with her fingernails. The fact is that women should have honest communication with their physicians about relieving menopausal symptoms. If any kind of hormone treatment is warranted, it should be the least amount for the shortest period of time. Anything other than that has not been documented to prolong life and there is no indication that it is safe to use indefinitely.

Rosie O'Donnell's blog, became a source of communication for her fans after she left her original talk show a few years back. She had a weird style of writing as each of her posts was more like a bad haiku poetry than anything else, much of which didn't make a whole lot of sense. Frankly, with so many blogs to read, who wants to work that hard trying to figure out what she was actually trying to say. To her credit, she did raise money and awareness for her worthy causes through her blog and her fans could see cool videos and photos of her family. Apparently, Rosie has tired of blogging and pulled her blog unexpectedly leaving her fans wondering what happened. What happened was, according to Rosie, she got tired of things being taken out of context and turning into a sound bite. That may be more her own doing than anyone else's, but you can bet that if the blog is gone, something else is coming down the pike from Rosie.

Never has this generation been exposed to such depths of an ailing economy, but so elated at the hope that this administration brings. However, no one human being can do it alone. The success of the next four years lies within all of us.

Miracle On The Hudson

This world seems like a bad place to live sometimes. We have to deal with terrorism, war, a failing economy due to the greed and ignorance of some people and just a derth of civil human beings. Just when things couldn't get any worse a miracle occurs. This miracle came in the form of a plane that landed in the Hudson River this week. It hadn't meant to be so, but fate had other ideas. Thanks to the skill and calm demeanor of one Chesley (Sully) Sullenberger, that plane almost gracefully came down just over the George Washington Bridge. Each and every passenger and flight staff were quickly evacuated, but not until Captain Sulley made sure that no one was left on that sinking plane. Ferry boats, both large and small came within minutes to scoop passengers off of the plane's wing and those who escaped into rafts. Nary a soul was lost or even badly hurt that day which only goes to prove that miracles do happen and that this world really isn't such a bad place to live afterall.

Even though the election has been over for quite some time now and all respective parties have moved on, apparently, Sarah Palin can't and the only thing that has been moving in the last two months is her mouth. She has lashed out at everyone from the people who handled the McCain campaign and, most recently, to us bloggers. In fact, she calls bloggers nothing but a bunch of bored, pathetic anononymous folks (I'm paraphrasing of course) who have nothing better to do with their lives but bash poor Sarah. Frankly, I think Sarah does a good job keeping herself in the news and not in a good way. If she is thinking that this is a good way to maintain her profile, making way for the 2012 election, then she is poorly advised. Besides, doesn't she already have a day job? Sarah, build a bridge and get over it already!

Less Is More

There is an old saying that less is more. Nothing applies more to plastic surgery. A little is okay, but too much can be horrific. Actress, Lisa Rinna, has admitted that she has gone too far with her face. She had injections into her cheeks with Juvaderm. The injections left her with swollen cheeks that almost appeared potmarked. She was horrified when she saw photos of herself and vowed she would never do that again. Unbelievably, Lisa was driven to such extremes by her own insecurities of growing older. Too many celebrities fall into the same trap. We all know who they are, but they do nothing to advance the idea of growing old gracefully. Lisa says she will not pursue such injections in the future, but she also says she will not give up Botox (which may be what gives her lips such a full appearance). She is refreshing to a point, but more refreshing would be to embrace this stage of life instead of trying to recapture the youth she has outgrown.

It is not news that Patrick Swayze is fighting an uphill battle against pancreatic cancer. Miraculously, has has made it through the first year of this fight, still standing and ready to debut in his new USA network show entitled "Beast" where he plays a hard-core detective with a dark past. By his side is his beautiful wife and soulmate, Lisa, who he met when she was only sixteen. They have been together for thirty-three years and recently renewed their marriage vows for close friends and family. Forget Brad and Angelina;this is the couple to look to for true and unconditional love. Here's hoping that Patrick will stick around a bit longer for his lovely wife and his adoring fans.

Tragic Beginning To The New Year

I've already heard of three children dying this past week, one of which is the 16 year old son of John Travolta and Kelly Preston. Unfortunately, celebrities are always scrutinized for how they live their private lives. Perhaps that is why John and Kelly protected their son Jett as much as possible, knowing full well that they might be judged for how they were raising him. It was long suspected that Jett had autism, among other things, but his parents never addressed the issue perhaps feeling that this was a private matter. It is sad that now that they are in mourning over the loss of their only son, that people want to lay blame or judge them. There is no greater loss than the loss of a child. I wish for them the privacy they are entitled to in this very difficult time.

The Boot recently caught up with Reba McIntyre to ask her several questions about her career, her life and her marriage. Reba is probably one of the most down to earth stars, as are many country artists and she was very frank during her interview. She says she is hopeful that she will have another television show in the future, but that the television industry has changed a lot since her last hit show "Reba". She also just changed record labels and recently recorded a duet with Barry Manilow for his 80s tribute CD on "Islands in the Stream", which will be released as a single this month. She attributes respect, above all else, as the success factor in her marriage and is gearing up for her youngest son, Shelby, to head off to college this fall. So what does Reba want to work on personally? She enjoys archiving photos that fans send her, but most of all, she wants to work on having more friends in the future and you can never have too many of those.

It's hard to believe that my blog is celebrating its third birthday this month. Three years ago, fresh out of a job, I began this blog to create a new business venture for myself. Along the way, I met some great people and learned an awful lot of blogging. I never knew how much money I could make doing this, but this blog has turned a nice little income over the last three years. I'm not sure if it can still do it in 2009, but in any event, it will still be here next year. I've taken this blog in other directions over the last three years and, while I still love to blog about beauty and fashion, other things have taken priority for me and I think that has shown in my posts which I hope people enjoy reading. I do wish all of you a good New Year inasmuch as I hope you find inner peace. I hope you create realistic goals for yourself to maintain a healthy lifestyle both physically and emotionally. If you have to make a New Year's resolution, then remember to treat yourself as well as you treat others and vice versa. Put one foot in front of the other, take each day at a time and remember to count your blessings. Peace.

A New Philosophy For The New Year

Many weight loss programs have come and gone in the last thirty years or so, but one program has steadily maintained their stronghold and that would be Weight Watchers. Not one to be stuck in a rut, Weight Watchers is now introducing a new philosophy to their weight loss system simply entitled "Momentum". There's lots of buzz going on about this new program, but little information about what it will do for WW members. The fact is that previously, WW had two programs that members could choose from (or change back and forth if necessary). The first was Flex, which gave each food item a point value. Point values were assigned to members based on their weight and members needed to follow the point value assigned daily. Next, came the Core program, which allowed members to eat whole foods (fruits and vegetables), lean protein and whole grains. Many times when members reached a plateau on Flex, they would switch to the Core program and many members combined both. Weight Watchers recognized this trend and now their new program will basically replace the previous programs and everyone will be doing Momentum. What Momentum will do is encourage members to choose foods that will fill them up faster so less calories are consumed. Many of these foods are plucked from the Core food group since they are whole foods and are high in fiber and water content. You can still count points, but are encouraged to eat these filling, healthy foods. The Momentum plan is being billed as a healthy lifestyle as opposed to a diet. Members will also be strongly encouraged to exercise thirty minutes most days of the week. All in all, this spells out a healthy lifestyle change for members, which is a healthy approach to weight loss any way. Of course, Weight Watchers will always have their naysayers, but that has never stopped them from helping millions of people lose weight. Also, Weight Watchers can be accessed via the internet, so if you can't do meetings, then online participation is the way to go. They always offer a three month trial for a nominal fee and you can choose to opt out of the plan if you aren't satisfied after the three months is up. Bad Hair Day

If you've seen Suzanne Somers lately, then you know that she has been wearing her hair basically the same way since she played Chrissy Show on "Three's Company" oh so many years ago. For a woman who is adament about not aging, she has picked the very worst way to try and stay young by not updating her hair. Now she just looks like a cartoon of herself, much like her logo for her Somerisize products which she is still selling on HSN. Bad hair or not, she is still insisting that she has found the fountain of youth and has written yet another book about it entitled "Breakthrough". She admitted on Larry King that she takes about sixty supplements a day and urges her readers to try to do the same, but supplements aren't cheap and aren't covered by medical insurance. You think with all that money, she could at least get a new hairstyle. Meow.

From Nanny To Senator?

Fran Dresher, famous for her show "The Nanny" is serious when she says she wants Hillary Clinton's Senate seat, when she vacates it. Caroline Kennedy is allegedly also interested in the job, but neither women have previous experience (not that it ever stopped anyone). Jennifer Aniston is the epitome of class! She has been fodder for the tabloids long before her break up with Brad Pitt. She's always gracious when interviewed, but down to earth and refreshingly honest. She recently gave a lengthy interview for "Vogue", but was surprised that they took something out of context that she said about Angelina Jolie and used it on the cover. She thought that was rather "tabloid" of them, but isn't everything, even the news? In any event, Jen can be seen starring opposite Owen Wilson in "Marley and Me" opening Christmas Day. Oddly enough, her ex, Brad will also be starring in another movie opening he very same day.

As many of you know, I was a huge fan of Barry Manilow for many years, but my fandom has waned over the years because he failed to dazzle me with his decade cover albums. However, I still enjoyed watching him on television and try to catch him when I can, especially when he's promoting himself. He made an appearance on "The Today Show" the day after Thanksgiving. On that same morning, Marlo Thomas was set to appear with several children from St. Jude's Hospital. They were there to help raise awareness and, in turn, raise money for this wonderful facility that will treat children for free. There weren't many of the children there, but apparently, Mr. Manilow allegedly was not willing to share the green room space with these kids. Of course, this is all hearsay, but certainly not the first time long-standing fans have heard these stories about Barry. Having a small cousin who is being treated for neuroblastoma, this news is both startling and disturbing, if it's true. Since I always try to look for the silver lining in every negative situation, I hope that this will raise awareness about childhood cancer and the need for money for both research and treatment. Last night, the much touted "Rosie, Live" debuted on NBC. Apparently, Rosie thinks it's a really great idea for her to channel Ed Sullivan and bring back a night-time variety show. Her over-zealousness could not be tamed in this hour of jam-packed celebrity/friends of Rosie's who tried desperately to pull this off. The results were horrific. It was just a very rushed mish-mosh of acts, with a few exceptions, namely Ne-Yo and Alannis Morrisette. Everything else was just fodder for Rosie's lame banter and skits which were more embarrassing than funny. I certainly hope that Rosie isn't intending on making this her regular gig. Personally, I'd rather watch my own turkey defrost than to have to live through this indigestion again.

Twilight, The Book

"Twilight", the movie is a huge blockbuster. The first weekend it opened, it grossed over seventy million dollars. If you are one of the few who have not yet seen the movie, then may I suggest that you read the book first. This gripping story of a young woman who falls in love with a vampire, is not just for teenage girls. I guess you can say that Stephenie Meyer, the author is a romance novelist for the new millenium, but her story telling involves so much more than romance. Her characters, even the minor players, have enough character to keep you turning page after page. Thankfully, for all of her fans, Ms. Meyer had the good sense to turn her book into a series, much like "Harry Potter", and just like "Harry Potter", with the success of the movie version of her first installment, there will be more films to come in the future, but first, read the books! I'm back from taking a much deserved blogging break to report about my newest and favorite reality show simply entitled "Ruby". If you don't already know, Ruby is an absolutely charming, beautiful and captivating southern belle, who is sharing with the rest of the world, her battle with obesity. After her doctor has warned her of some serious health consequences, Ruby enlists her close friends and family to help her lose the weight necessary so she can lead relatively normal and healthy life. She is unbelievably candid about her feelings and there are some very touching and painful moments caught on camera, including people who make rude comments or simply just stare at her in disbelief. There are over 96 million people who suffer from obesity in our country (many of whom are very young people) and this show really goes far to show the issue of prejudice in the very simple things we all take for granted like chairs that are suitable for everyone. How ironic for Ruby when she goes to see a doctor who specializes in obesity, when she realizes that there are no chairs in the waiting room suitable for her. Viewers also become aware of how the people around Ruby have often enabled her to feed (literally) her addiction to food. It is a learning experience for them as well as for us. No doubt, you've already heard of the infamous and famous Duggar Family of Arkansas. They are devout Christians (Baptists to be more specific), but they are part of a small sect of Christians who follow the Quiverfull movement. Basically, they don't believe in any form of birth control as they believe that every child is a gift from God. Apparently, when parents Jim Bob and Michelle first got married, they did use birth control, like any other newly married couple, but when Michelle got pregnant and miscarried while using birth control, they decided that this was a sign from God to let nature take its course. Needless to say, nature has been working over time in the Duggar household and Michelle is now expecting child number 18 on New Year's Day. The newest member of the household will be a girl bearing a name that begins with the letter "J". While one is coming in, the oldest boy, Josh, recently married a fellow, home-schooled Christian girl named Anna, last month. Josh and his new wife will be hopefully fulling their home with children and will probably have their own reality series, just like Michelle and Jim Bob. While it's not the lifestyle most people would choose, one can't really pass judgment. The Duggars, both of whom are licensed real estate agents and who support their growing family, debt free, have a wonderful, seemingly normal group of children who are well spoken and very intelligent. One does have to wonder about the social aspects of their life, but the kids don't seem any worse off than any other kid who has grown up in a dysfunctional "normal" family. Frankly, I've grown quite fond of this family and was happy to see that they now have a new reality show on TLC which airs a new episode every Monday night.

No Room With A View

"The View" has not been without controversy since the day it first aired so many years ago, but what can you expect when you put a bunch of women around a table in front of millions of viewers a day? That was the whole point of the show to begin with and henceforth, the title of the show. Now it appears that there is little room for opinions in this already sizzling political climate, at least for Elisabeth Hasselbeck. She is the lone conservative, but she cannot or will not allow for an intelligent debate on political topics without becoming abusive and belligerent. In fact, she is beginning to become more and more like her nemisis, Rosie O'Donnell; the straight, conservative version of her at least. I'm not a fan of Hasselbeck and it has little to do with the fact that she leans so far to the right. She is not an intelligent person to begin with and is no match for Barbara Walters or even Whoopie Goldberg. Say what you want about Star Jones, but she had half a brain, which is more than I can say for at least two of the co-hosts of a show I gave up on long ago. Just wish it would already die from what appears to be a slow and painful death.

Halloween is probably one of my favorite holidays. In fact, anything that involves the giving and receiving of chocolate is always good with me. However, this year it seems more important. Halloween comes at a time when we need some fun and fantasy right now and there's really no better way to celebrate than with fun Halloween Costumes. Of course, there are literally hundreds of costumes to choose from, but what would best suit your personality? Personally, I'm a movie lover and my favorite movie of all time is "The Wizard of Oz". Now I can choose from one of many characters from the movie and, best of all, I can get a matching costume for my dog. Even if you are just planning on staying home and answering the door for all the little trick-or-treaters, why not give them a treat and dress up for the occasion. You can be a scary witch or your favorite super hero. Also, why rent an expensive costume, when you can own the very same one? This way you can have it for years to come and pass it on to others when your done and really get your money's worth and who doesn't want to get their money's worth right about now? Also, take advantage of shopping online. If you read my blog with any regularity, then you know how much I love to shop right from my home. It saves me money on gas and time and I don't even have to change out of my pajamas. Also, most of the time when I shop online, I actually save more money on each product I purchase and shopping wisely has never been more important. Give yourself a treat this year and get a great costume. It will make you feel better and you bring a smile to everyone you meet on Halloween and that's the best gift you really can give someone.

There are lots of things I could blog about, Madonna's divorce being just one of many, but since I am shying away from mindless gossip, I've chosen instead to shed a light on a woman who was one of the first to crack the glass ceiling. In fact, without Gloria Steinam, there may have never been a Hilary Clinton or a Sarah Palin for that matter. She has been an advocate, an activist, an author and the founder of Ms. Magazine, the first magazine dedicated to working women. At seventy-four, she really looks very much like she did those many years ago when, as a journalist, she went under cover as a bunny at the Playboy club. She was going to write an expose about the experience, and she did, but the Playboy club loved her so much that they asked her to work on and off long after she needed to. She never bore children, but believe me, she validates women who choose to stay home to raise their children as much as those who choose life as a career woman. She married late in life in her early sixties, but her beloved husband passed away not long after their marriage. Now she is being honored as just one of the recipients of the coveted Minverva Awards to be presented on October 22nd. These awards are given to women who truly dared to be true to themselves and, in return, served as role models for so many women who came after them. Remembering Susan

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. This is traditionally the time I pick up the phone and make an appointment for my yearly mammogram and, like clockwork, I didn't miss the opportunity because I know how important it is to have clinical examinations and mammograms every year. Early detection is the best defense and survival rates have risen to over eighty percent in women who have their cancer detected in the early stages. One person who truly wanted to help women in their quest to fight the disease was a woman named Susan Goodman Komen. She was a beautiful, young and brilliant woman whose life ended too soon, as with many women. Her strength and her desire to bring breast cancer awareness out in the open did not die with her however. Her sister, Nancy started the Susan G. Komen foundation in honor of her brave sister. The foundation has raised over a billion dollars and has helped bring women together in sisterhood with their annual Race for the Cure. So Sarah Palin had her first and only Vice-Presidential debate last night. The pundits weighed in after, of course, and she scored high. However, considering expectations were so low, I do get the impression that they cut her slack in a rather sexist way. She isn't running for PTA president afterall, but if elected, will be the heartbeat away from a man who is in his 70s and has had several bouts of skin cancer already. Now, if I were scoring Sarah agains other PTA moms, then yes, she got high scores for memorizing her well-rehearsed script and she got to use big words occasionally, but she is not fit to run for such high office. We don't need a soccer mom, a hockey mom or a pitbull with lipstick to lead the legislative branch of our government. We do however, need a man like Joe Biden who can knock back a six-pack probably better than Sarah and can properly pronounce the word nuclear. This is a man who completely understands foreign policy, the Bush doctrine and who can clearly and concisely list the agenda outlined by Barack Obama, should he hopefully be elected to the Presidency.

It's been only three weeks since school was back in session, but already we are reminded about the importance of organization. I'm not only the parent of two school-age children, but I'm also a teaching assistant in a second grade classroom. Working in the classroom on a daily basis, I am taken back to my own school days of brand new pencils and pencil cases, lunch boxes and notebooks. Each item had to be carefully labeled since most looked alike and how else could we possibly tell them apart? Some things never change and what's popular is what most kids really want. It's so important to label each item carefully so little Nicholas and little Michael don't get into a fight over the Spiderman backpacks. Color labels would be so useful on backpacks, lunch boxes and bags even ziplock bags that carry snacks and toys that are carried to school with anticipation of recreation with best friends. It not only makes things easier for teachers, but parents don't have to wonder if their kids brought home someone else's notebooks or text books. It's also great fun for the kids to help mom or dad put labels on their newly-purchased items. They feel accomplished that they were able to help and they also get to practice their spelling. Also when labeling, think outside the box. Don't forget umbrellas, snow boots, gym bags, rain coats, snowsuits and anything else you can think of to help your child better organize themselves. School is stressful enough and young children especially need to learn the importance of organizing at a very early age as it will help them perform better in school. Once you begin labeling all items, you will get into the habit of doing it every year and you'll see what a difference it will make in your child's life, which is the most important thing.

I am having Sarah Palin nightmares. I dreamt last night that she was
a member of a club where they rode snowmobiles and wore the claws of
drowned and starved polar bears around their necks. I have a
particular thing for Polar Bears. Maybe it's their snowy whiteness or
their bigness or the fact that they live in the arctic or that I have
never seen one in person or touched one. Maybe it is the fact that
they live so comfortably on ice. Whatever it is, I need the polar
bears.

I don't like raging at women. I am a Feminist and have spent my life
trying to build community, help empower women and stop violence
against them. It is hard to write about Sarah Palin. This is why the
Sarah Palin choice was all the more insidious and cynical. The people
who made this choice count on the goodness and solidarity of
Feminists.

But everything Sarah Palin believes in and practices is antithetical
to Feminism which for me is part of one story -- connected to saving
the earth, ending racism, empowering women, giving young girls
options, opening our minds, deepening tolerance, and ending violence
and war.

I believe that the McCain/Palin ticket is one of the most dangerous
choices of my lifetime, and should this country chose those candidates
the fall-out may be so great, the destruction so vast in so many areas
that America may never recover. But what is equally disturbing is the
impact that duo would have on the rest of the world. Unfortunately,
this is not a joke. In my lifetime I have seen the clownish, the
inept, the bizarre be elected to the presidency with regularity.

Sarah Palin does not believe in evolution. I take this as a metaphor.
In her world and the world of Fundamentalists nothing changes or gets
better or evolves. She does not believe in global warming. The melting
of the arctic, the storms that are destroying our cities, the
pollution and rise of cancers, are all part of God's plan. She is
fighting to take the polar bears off the endangered species list. The
earth, in Palin's view, is here to be taken and plundered. The wolves
and the bears are here to be shot and plundered. The oil is here to be
taken and plundered. Iraq is here to be taken and plundered. As she
said herself of the Iraqi war, "It was a task from God."

Sarah Palin does not believe in abortion. She does not believe women
who are raped and incested and ripped open against their will should
have a right to determine whether they have their rapist's baby or
not.

She obviously does not believe in sex education or birth control. I
imagine her daughter was practicing abstinence and we know how many
babies that makes.

Sarah Palin does not much believe in thinking. From what I gather she
has tried to ban books from the library, has a tendency to dispense
with people who think independently. She cannot tolerate an
environment of ambiguity and difference. This is a woman who could and
might very well be the next president of the United States. She would
govern one of the most diverse populations on the earth.

Sarah believes in guns. She has her own custom Austrian hunting
rifle. She has been known to kill 40 caribou at a clip. She has shot
hundreds of wolves from the air.

Sarah believes in God. That is of course her right, her private
right. But when God and Guns come together in the public sector, when
war is declared in God's name, when the rights of women are denied in
his name, that is the end of separation of church and state and the
undoing of everything America has ever tried to be.

I write to my sisters. I write because I believe we hold this
election in our hands. This vote is a vote that will determine the
future not just of the U.S., but of the planet. It will determine
whether we create policies to save the earth or make it forever
uninhabitable for humans. It will determine whether we move towards
dialogue and diplomacy in the world or whether we escalate violence
through invasion, undermining and attack. It will determine whether we
go for oil, strip mining, coal burning or invest our money in
alternatives that will free us from dependency and destruction. It
will determine if money gets spent on education and healthcare or
whether we build more and more methods of killing. It will determine
whether America is a free open tolerant society or a closed place of
fear, fundamentalism and aggression.

If the Polar Bears don't move you to go and do everything in your
power to get Obama elected then consider the chant that filled the
hall after Palin spoke at the RNC, "Drill Drill Drill." I think of
teeth when I think of drills. I think of rape. I think of destruction.
I think of domination. I think of military exercises that force
mindless repetition, emptying the brain of analysis, doubt, ambiguity
or dissent. I think of pain.

Do we want a future of drilling? More holes in the ozone, in the
floor of the sea, more holes in our thinking, in the trust between
nations and peoples, more holes in the fabric of this precious thing
we call life?

She has been preaching abstinance only as the only suitable form of sex education for children and she has publically called parents of teens who find themselves pregnant, failures because they didn't teach their children not to have sex. Well now she's in the very same boat so who's the failure now and how well did that abstinance only education work in her own home? She's nothing more than a backwoods, redneck, hockey mom who probably pushed all the other mothers around at the PTA meetings way back when and she bullied her way up to the top of government in her hometown of Alaska in a town that has more wild life than people. She's the most scary person in politics right now. She's totally unsuitable and she's facing charges that she used her power abusively to get someone fired that she didn't like. Shame on anyone who actually supports this bitch.

I'll come right out and say that it totally disgusts me that Cindy McCain came out at the Republican Convention dripping in thousands of dollars worth of diamonds ans pearls and dressed in a haute couture outfit. Her husband, John McCain, is supposed to be representing the common men and women of our country. How can anyone relate to a woman who not only flaunts her wealth, but picked her husband up in a bar, knowing he was a married man at the time. I'll talk more about his choice in running mates, but don't expect Cindy McCain to be a first lady of the people. Give them woman a crown and maybe then she'll be happy.

It's been a while since I've posted here. I've been dealing with some medical issues and frankly I've been consumed by it on a daily basis and everything else, including blogging had to take a back seat for the time being. I won't go into details, but basically I'll be fine. One thing that got me through this very anxious period was a website simply called Daily Strength. This is a social community dedicated to supporting both women and men in all kinds of medical and emotional need. The board is staffed by both doctors and therapists who voluntarily give of their time to answer personal questions and give group support where needed. I found this place to be very comforting and I've met some incredible people there. We live in difficult economic times in our country. I had the privilege of seeing Christina Applegate on the Broadway stage a few years back. She was playing the lead role in a musical comedy and we had second row seats. She surprised me because she was so charming and talented. She could sing and dance and she was just so delightful to watch. Of course, Christina is best known for her role as one of the Bundy's, Fox's break out situation comedy, but she can be seen most recently in her Emmy-nominated role in "Samantha Who?". However, Christina has been in the news recently, not for her talent, but for the disturbing news that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Christina recently went on the record on "Good Morning America" to talk candidly about her diagnosis and inform her fans that she opted to have a radical mastectomy on both her breasts as a preventative measure, albeit a drastic one. She went on to say that she tested positive for the gene that causes both breast and ovarian cancer and that her own mother had suffered with breast cancer at a young age. Looking forward to the future, Christina will have reconstructive surgery and looks forward to a long and productive life and having the cutest boobs in the nursing home. Women like Christina Applegate who are open and honest about their challenges give hope and courage to so many who are also facing the very same challenges.

Apparently, John is not only an egotistical moron who has an insatiable need to hook up with any female celebrity that can get his photo in the tabloids, but he is obviously mistaking us for someone who actually gives a shit. Jennifer isn't saying a word, wise woman that she is, but her friends say she did the dumping. Why? (as if you care). Roseanne Barr may not be a household name much any more, but that hasn't stopped her from having a successful career or from speaking her mind. In fact, Roseanne has been very much in the news these last few days for speaking her mind about everyone's favorite couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, otherwise known as Brangelina. If this is true, then she maybe needs to crack open a newspaper from time to time to see what's really been going on in our country while she basks in the sun in the south of France. I'm all about the greening of our environment and one way to do that is through recycling. Most of our communities already have recycling programs for plastic, tin and glass, but what about the rest of the stuff we no longer want or use? This is the stuff we know we will never get a chance to sell at a garage sale. Or, maybe you already had a garage sale and want to get rid of the remainder. Well, you can with freecycle. This is a global community that swaps all kinds of stuff from clothing to furniture to electronics and more. By swapping what you no longer use, you are keeping things out of landfills and by getting more stuff this way you can save yourself some money and not add to what is already more than abundant in the world. I've been happy about joining one that is in my own community through Yahoo. I've been able to purge some of what has been cluttering up my shed, freeing up some space and giving away what I no longer need or use and sharing it with someone else. Today was a very typical day for me until the mail came. My mailman always comes around 3 PM. I do wish he could deliver the mail earlier, especially on a day like today, but I guess I might as well wish for a million dollars (I'd probably be more likely to get that). In any event, I grabbed the mail and began going through each envelope, but stopped short at one that came from my gynocologist's office. This is never a good thing, especially on a Friday afternoon. Sure enough, when I ripped open the envelope, there was a letter stating that my last Pap smear, which was taken a few weeks ago, came back abnormal. This isn't the first time this has happened, but my last pap smear before that one was normal so I was very surprised, especially when I continued to read on. My doctor wants to perform a coloscopy. In fact, the exact wording was "required". Of course, when I called the office, my doctor wasn't in (she never is on a Friday) and the receptionist told me that the computer was down so basically, I was sh... out of luck until Monday. I have gone through many emotions since this afternoon. I did basically freak out at one point, but since I have been able to make a connection with at least one friend who assured me it's no big deal. She's had two of these tests and then everything was normal. In fact, I've scoured the internet looking for similar scenarios and thankfully, there were tons of recounts from women who basically went through the same thing and, most of the time, it never went further than that. I'm still not entirely at ease, but what can one do on a Friday night other than drink a bottle of wine and eat ice cream and chocolate? I'm thankful to have a very cautious doctor. She has alarmed me on more than one occasion over the last twenty-five years, but I trust her judgment. Ladies, keep your friends close and your gynocologists even closer.

In Defense of Ali

Lindsay Lohan has come out fighting over allegations that her younger sister, Ali, had breast implants, as alleged in US Magazine. I would have included the link to that blog post, but Myspace must be inundated with hits today after the news broke that Lindsay was defending her little sis in her blog. US Weekly apparently ran side by side photos of Ali, age fourteen as before and after photos. The photos are very convincing inasmuch as Ali seems to have filled out in a very short period of time. Is it possible that a fourteen year old could even get breast implants? I suppose that it could happen, but how unethical would it be on the part of a parent or a doctor? There's been so much turmoil in this family and having a reality show doesn't help matters at all. It just exposes how dysfunctional things really are and how headstrong mom is to make her babies superstars. I'm sure we've not heard the last of this from any member of the Lohan family.

Today is my twenty-first wedding anniversary. It hardly seems like twenty-one years have past, but time goes very quickly. Speaking of time, when we first got engaged we took a trip to a resort in the mountains. It was a free stay over, but we had to listen to a seminar about time shares. We were promised a gift at the end of that seminar and what we got was a miniature grandfather clock. It was actually perfect because we lived in a small apartment at the time so it was well suited for the space we had available. Now you know if you've been reading my blog, I often discuss things like home decor. Well clocks are really a great way to add some character to a room. I normally don't write about stuff like this, but the latest bombshell that yet another holier-than-thou politician has fallen from grace deserved at least one post from me. So John Edwards cheated on his wife. Should we really be surprised? Some of the most publicly popular politicians like Bill Clinton and former Governor Spitzer, just to name two, were not only cheaters, they exhibited the tendencies of those who are sexually addicted. It would seem to me that such behavior goes with the territory, similar to superstar athletes. Is it is their narcisstic ego that drives them to do such things or that it's just thrown in their face and they just can't help themselves. In Edwards case, it may be that he was coping very poorly with a wife who was suffering from breast cancer. So is this the end of his political career? I doubt it. Somewhere down the road, all will be forgiven. I'm sure in the back of his mind he probably thinks the same thing.

Mary-Kate Olsen has been in the new lately and it's not because of her fashion savvy, new movie or social scene she's been making. This multi-millionare diva is being sought after by none other than the FBI as they continue their investigation into the death of actor, Heath Ledger. Allegedly, Mary-Kate asked for immunity, before being questioned, otherwise she's not talking. Of course, the FBI are wondering where Heath got all those drugs that were found in his system. Could it be that someone may think that Heath got his drugs from a well-intentioned friend rather than a doctor? It seems all so sordid and makes one wonder why Mary-Kate is being so protective. Mary-Kate is no stranger to the party scene and it has been well-documented that she and Heath were good friends who hung out together, late into the night, at various party spots around NYC. She may have been one of the last people to see him alive as well and she was definitely one of the few people that was contacted when Heath was found unconscious. She allegedly supplied her own security detail that night to be dispatched to his apartment. So why won't she talk? Maybe she has something to hide or is just being protective. Cemented On The D List

Kathy Griffin has gained lots of attention from her Bravo reality show "My Life on the D List". In fact, she even garnered the much-coveted Emmy Award. The show began as a chronicle of her professional life as well as her personal life with her family and her then husband/manager Matt. Three years later, we are still watching Kathy as she tries desperately to get off the D list. If her show is any indication of reality, then she's not getting off that list any time soon. What started out as a nice balance between her hard-working approach to career (she even performed in Iraq) has turned into a three-ring, or should I say four-ring circus (her and her three personal assistants). I was a big fan early on, but now I'm not so sure how I should feel about Kathy. We rarely see her mom this season and the only other indication that she may actually have a personal life is when she drags on her "boyfriend", billionare Steve Wozniak and that's not saying much. I still think Kathy is great! I just wish I could see a little bit more of the real Kathy every once in a while. It is a reality show afterall.

I just wanted to pay a little tribute to a woman who made such a huge impact in television when she was already well into her fifties. Estelle proved that a woman can have a successful career in show business at any age, providing the right role comes along. In her case, she would play the mom of Beatrice Arthur, even though she and Beatrice were not that far apart in age. Estelle was able to create the illusion of a much older woman, but with such incredible humor that she became an icon. Recently some unauthorized photos started circulating around the tabloids of Barry Manilow. He looked particularly gaunt and thin in these particular photos. I guess having a court-appointed psychiatrist publicly advising that all parties need therapy prompted this quick settlement. In fact, the couple met and exchanged words, with attorneys present, as early as 6:30 this morning at a local hotel and hammered out a deal that will give Christy primary custody of their two children, with Peter having ample visiting rights. Dying Young

Many years ago there was an enigmatic singer named Janis Joplin. She received many accolades for her recordings and live performances, but she may have been more well known for her lifestyle of booze, drugs and lovers galore. It was as if she chose her own destiny, living and dying as she would have wanted it, but her loss is felt to this day, especially in the music world. This generation has seen Amy Winehouse traveling the very same path. This incredibly talented performer and recording artist however, is becoming more well known for her trips to jail, rehab and hospitals for scary health reasons. Allegedly she has been diagnosed with emphysema with the lung capacity of an eighty year old woman, yet she was caught smoking shortly after her release from a hospital. So what is the truth here? Are the health claims blown out of proportion or is she destined to die young like Janis. One can only hope it isn't the latter.

The news of the world is never really optimistic. In fact, I often avoid it to retreat into my 'Gilmore Girls' world so I can get a good night's sleep and avoid any addiction to Xanax. There are few people that make sense and good fun of all that seems so wrong and George Carlin was one of those people. You could say that he is a pioneer. If it wasn't for George, there would probably be no 'Daily News' or Bill Maher. He stepped forward and made us see all the absurdity in the world. He made us laugh and he made us all the wiser while we were laughing. He will be sadly missed.

The surface story here is that Jamie Lynne Spears has finally given birth to a baby girl, but that's not the real story. The real story is that more and more teenage girls are deliberately getting pregnant in order to experience the feeling of unconditional love. In fact school districts across the country are burdened with the responsibility of providing daycare for these babies so that their mothers won't drop out of school. Unfortunately, too late these young girls find out that there's no glory in having a baby at such a tender age. Raising another human being is a daunting task which allows little time for a sleep let alone a social life. So what does Jamie Lynne have to do with all of this? Maybe nothing, but her well-documented pregnancy has done nothing to discourage girls from deliberately getting pregnant and that's a very scary thing.

Apparently, the popular opinion about Michelle Obama is not particular favorable. She probably turned people off with her "I'm not proud to be an American" comment and she often appears too serious. However, Michelle is determined to turn her image around now that her husband is clearly the Democratic nominee for President. She appeared today on "The View" with a softer appearance in her hair and clothing and more chummy than she has in other interviews. She is not alone in her need to change her image to turn popular opinion around. Hillary Clinton needed to do the very same when her husband was first running for President and look what happened to her so who knows where Michelle will be in about ten years from now.
