Yoga, Pilates??? What's the difference??

I've been questioned by one of my readers about the difference between yoga and Pilates. I'm no expert in either, although I've practiced both over the years. I will start with what's similar about them. Both are grounded in exacting excercises (Pilates) or postures (yoga). Pilates exericses (as precisely performed) will not only achieve a long, lean posture (much like yoga will), but serves to strengthen the core of the body (your abdominal area) in order to primarily protect the back against any injury). Both forms of exercise are rooted in a mind, body connection, while yoga is also focused on connecting spirit as well. Both can be performed by most people in some form and both have been adapted to be performed by those who have limitations. Both are usually performed on a similar kind of mat through a series of exercises that were developed to achieve a certain result. How they differ is both big and small. Again, yoga serves to achieve a connection between mind, body and spirit incorporating meditation (the most important part of yoga) with the postures. Postures vary depending on variations in forms of yoga. Yoga has also been around alot longer than Pilates. Pilates was actually developed within the last century by Joseph Pilates, originally to help ballet dancers to help protect themselves against any further injury that may have resulted from years of strenuous performances. Through a series of exercises, Pilates serves to achieve a strong core, which not only results in a longer, leaner posture, but also protects the back by developing strong abdominal muscles. Again, both yoga and Pilates are similar inasmuch as both should be performed with exacting precision. However, while Pilates is useful in developing a strong core, yoga is very helpful in developing balance. I hope this has been helpful to you and all I can say, is try both if you can. You will surely be hooked on at least one of these!
