Myspace Equals Every Mother's Nightmare
http://www.nbc4.tv/news/7473070/detail.html I've included a link to a story about Myspace which is making the rounds this afternoon on the internet. It involves Myspace.com and, for those of you who are not familiar, this site is one of the most popular among teens. It allows teens to connect with other teens through personal pages that include personal information, photos and blog entries. Initially, this had all the good intentions of it's visionary, Tom, but like all things on the internet, there is a very dark side. This seemingly innocent idea has also turned out to be a lure for pedofiles looking to hook up with youngsters by disguising themselves as teenagers themselves. There's absolutely no way for anyone to know who is actually posting on this and other sites like it and, as a result, has become one of the scariest places on earth. Unfortunately, parents sometimes become lulled into a false sense of security because of the mere knowledge that their children are at home. I've been guilty of this myself, but the internet is no place to rest on our laurels. I really don't think it can be reinforced enough that children, and that includes teenagers, be reminded about not chatting with people they don't know and, certainly, not meeting people they met on the internet. Here, in this article, is just another reminder of how we have to be on constant alert. Let's all hope that something is done about it in the near future.
