The Great Trans Fat Debate
Trans Fat has gotten a lot of publicity lately and none of it good. Many school districts are working on eliminating foods from their menu that contain and/or cooked in trans fat. Some school districts have already removed high-fat snacks like chips and replaced them with baked chips, cereal bars and low-fat popcorn. They've also switched the type of oil used to fry foods to soybean oil, which contain no trans fat. One school even goes as far as to prepare all its food from scratch by buying and using the food from local farms. Kids are eating healthier while the school district is supporting the local farms and businesses in the area. The bottom line is trying to keep unhealthy fat from childrens' diets so that they will not bear the burden of heart disease at some point in their lives.
