The Man in the Mirror
Is it just me, or have you also been noticing lately that men are becoming more self-conscious about their looks, particularly when it comes to aging. It used to be that men would just age and take whatever they got in the way of the gene pool. Some guys look amazing at any age (Clint Eastwood and Paul Newman, just to name two), while others lose their hair and grow paunchy early on in their fifties and then it's all down hill from there. Lately though I think more men are turning to the same methods of turning back the clock, as women have for years, namely plastic surgery. More and more men are exfoliating, resurfacing, peeling, plumping, injecting and, if that fails, tugging and pulling in an upward direction. I'm not sure how I feel about it because I'm one of those women who think men are much more attractive with a few or more gray hairs and lines around their eyes, especially when they smile. However, I understand how our culture works now and the overwhelming need to cling to youth because that is our value system. However, some of the awful surgery leaves some of these guys looking more like wax figures than real men who have lived full lives (Burt Reynolds comes to mind immediately). Funny, these guys probably never gave sunblock a second thought back in their twenties and probably wished they hadn't been so macho way back when...it would have saved them a ton of money in the long run!
