Ugly Betty
Are you loving the new fall television shows as much as I am? I haven't seen one bad new show yet, although some like "Men in Trees" has been blessed with a cursed time slot that may not allow it to make it through all the contractual episodes. Then there's brilliant television in the form of a new show called "Ugly Betty". This is the brainchild of executive producer, Selma Hayack, who took the Spanish version that was already a hit, and recreated it for American television. Betty, played very nicely by America Ferrara, is an extremely bright young woman who takes a job at a fashion magazine (Mode)as an assistant to the editor. Unfortunately, she is chosen more because of her plain jane looks than her capabilities, although she is more than capable. So, this is not just a comedy, but a bit of a night-time soap opera as well featuring beautiful women who think they are too good for everyone else, villians, mysterious people who hold secrets that can destroy careers, and a fashion channel that promises to make everyone else feel bad so you can feel good. Bravo to ABC for stepping outside the box for a show that is clearly a hit. "Ugly Betty" has a tough time slot on Thursday nights opposite "My Name is Earl" and "The Office", but it has already proven to earn an audience and hopefully we will be seeing more of Betty in the future.
