Some Common Sense about Good Scents
Have you ever walked into one of those perfume discount stores and nearly passed out from the overwhelming scent of perfume? It's like a migraine headache waiting to happen. There's nothing more obnoxious than be clobbered over the head with the smell of perfume (except maybe someone wearing too much perfume while talking on their cell phone). Ask any man, and most will tell you that too much perfume is more of a turn off than anything else. Many women (and men too) dowse themselves with their favorite scent and walking behind them in a mall or, worse yet, getting caught with them in an elevator can be like torture. Most of us want to smell enticing, but how do we go about choosing a scent that's right for us without insulting other people. Here are a few tips for buying a perfume that is right for you.
1) Try not to be influenced by the advertising of a fragrance or the celebrity name that might be attached to it. Selecting a fragrance is a very personal thing and just because Oprah likes Sara Jessica Parker's perfume, doesn't mean it will be right for you. Try it first before you decide.
2) Do not purchase any counterfeit or smell-alike perfumes. In the end, these smell more like alcohol than anything else and will end up being tossed in the trash. Invest in a real perfume. It's worth it!
3) When trying on a perfume do spray a little of it on your wrist and not on one of those little cards they provide you with at the store. It will smell differently on you than anything or anyone else and it's best to spray it, let it sit for a while and then smell it. Don't buy it right away, even if you like it. Wait a few hours and keep sniffing to see all the different notes of the scent. Then, if you still like it, you can make the purchase knowing that you really liked it on you and not someone else.
4) The best place to wear perfume on your body is where your body temperature will continually release the scent throughout the day and evening. Try your wrists, inner arms, chest and inner thigh area. Avoid getting perfume on your clothing as it can and will stain (especially silk). Avoid spraying around your face or areas that will be exposed to the sun and don't mix your perfumes.
5) If you have several scents you enjoy wearing, pick each scent depending on the occasion. For instance, don't wear a heavy fragrance if you are going out for dinner or if you are going off to work. Save the richer fragrances for more intimate evenings and choose something light and fresh for casual daytime wear.
